A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

To our members, players, sponsors, family and friends,
Welcome to another season of EFL football and the Doncaster Football Club.
The new football season is imminent, and the Sharks are participating in Division One for the first time since 1991.

If you have recently joined the Sharks, below is a brief overview of the club:

  • Founded in 1908.
  • Have won (12) twelve senior premierships.
  • Latest premierships; 2011, 2013 and 2015.
  • Is a foundation member of the Eastern Football League (EFL) formed in 1962.
  • Have a solid working relationship with Doncaster Junior Football Club (DJFC).
  • DJFC this year has 10 teams and approx. 70 Auskickers.
  • Our recruitment policy includes pursuing experienced players and focusing on under 19’s and junior development (DJFC).
  • Have a proven club structure and a strong working committee.

Like all clubs we have a strong focus on fundraising including:

  • A Coterie group which continues to grow in numbers (target 130 members).
  • Newly formed Business Partners group to promote your business.
  • Sponsorship packages that can be tailored to suit your needs.

Importantly, the club needs your support if we’re to compete with the “EFL big boys” in coming years. Please review these packages on our website and join the Shark Army.

I am delighted to advise our Senior Best & Fairest is named in honor of the Hirsh Family for recognition of service to the club

The Hirsch family has been involved with the Doncaster Football Club since the 1960’s and are the only family from this period to remain actively involved in the club.

Jack Hirsch won the u16’s Best & Fairest in 1963 and duly won the senior B & F in 1966 and 1967, together with the EFL Division One medal at the age of 21. The following year he was recruited by Hawthorn but suffered a career ending knee injury and retired before his 22nd birthday. Sadly, Jack passed away in 2013.

While Jack had the ability, Eddie Hirsch had the passion, and together with Jack they worked hard together to support the Doncaster Football Club off the field. The Hirsch families’ generous financial support started in the late 60’s and is now stronger than ever. It is reasonable to suggest that without this support the club would not be in the position it is today. Today Eddie remains actively involved with the club and dreams of winning a Division One premiership.

MOVING OUR FOCUS TO ON-FIELD

There’s been a large turnover of players, which is not surprising when you consider three years ago the club was playing in Division Three. We wish all of these players, many of whom have gone to neighboring and much respected Donvale FC, all the best for the season and offer an open invitation for them to return to the club in a playing or social capacity.

Premiership player Aaron Fiora has retired, while Nathan Thompson has moved the family to Kyneton and is actively involved with the football club. Thanks for the memories boys!

Our senior coach Andrew Tranquilli and sidekick Heath Scotland are putting a senior list together, which is sure to be competitive this season.
They are still seeking a Development / Reserves coach to provide a level of field support for the season. Refer to the club website for contact detail.

A number of senior recruits have joined the club in 2016, including:

Sam Caruso – Pascoe Vale EDFL – small midfielder, who won the 2014 Best & Fairest & came 4th in 2015 at a club laden with ex=AFL talent. Originally from Wangaratta Rovers, Sam is renowned for his strong running ethic.

Unlucky to miss the final series, Peter has played juniors in a very successful Beverley Hills side. A Key Position player that can play at either end, it will be exciting to see his transition into senior football.

Another batch of senior and U19 recruits will be announced on the website in coming weeks.

There has been a concentration on young footballers with experience at high local levels, and the football department has been more extensive than ever before in the search for the new breed of Shark. There is a strong undercurrent of young footballers being groomed to play successful Division 1 football. The on-field department looks forward to the challenge confronting it in 2016.

We have the strongest U19 pool of talent seen at the club for many years and look forward to developing the players during the season.
